The church-lighthouse, begun in 2004, was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of sailors in 2007. The town is on the shore of the Black Sea, along the Belaya River. The church-lighthouse was built as a memorial to the victims of sea catastrophe. It includes a museum of such disasters in the crypt and there is a memorial wall with nameplates for those who died in the sea. The main icon is made of a half million knitted knots, without any silver or gold. It took a year and a half and the actor who made the icon was almost completely paralyzed when he started. Doctors had advised him to strengthen his hand by knitting. When the icon was completed he was almost completely healed.
