Bakhchisaray

Bakhchisaray

You can visit the the capital of the Crimean Tatar Khanate. Bakhchisaray is rather popular tourist destination. There are several sights attracting people to visit this place.

First you will see The Khan's Palace. It was a patrimonial residence of dystany of Girey- governors Crimean khanate. The Khan's Palace was constructed as “terrestrial embodiment of a paradise garden”.

Then you will be amazed the beauty of Uspensky Cave Monastery. There is a fascinating legend that gives an alternative tale as to the origin of the monastery and the reason to why it was built.

As the name of the monastery suggests, the walls, windows and doors are all carved out of the natural limestone cliffs and caves that make up this beautiful valley.

If you continue with the geography of the valley it will eventually take you to Chufut-Kaleh, an ancient cave city.

It is a national monument of Crimean Karaite culture and Tatar fortress. It's wonderful to explore, especially the burial chambers and casemates with large open 'windows' in the vertiginous northern cliff. These are truly breathtaking, as is the view into the valley below.

History

Located in a narrow valley of the Çürük Suv river which is known as an old local center of civilization (the first artifacts of human presence in the valley date up to the Mesolithic). The settlements which existed in the valley before Bakhchisaray was founded — Q?rq Yer fortress (modern Çufut Qale), Salaç?q, and Eski Yurt — are nowadays incorporated into the urban area of the modern Bakhchisaray.

Bakhchysarai, first mentioned 1502, was established as the new khan's residence by the Crimean KhanSahib I Giray in 1532. Since then, it was the capital of the Crimean Khanate and the center of political and cultural life of the Crimean Tatar people. After several wars with Russia from 1737 when Burkhard Christoph von Münnich burnt down the capital of Khanate and occupation of the Crimean Khanate by the Russian Empire in 1783, it was turned into an ordinary town, having lost administrative significance. However, it remained the cultural center of the Crimean Tatars until the Sürgün (deportation on 18 May 1944).
